Grace II

There is something about the word grace that implies giving and sharing. Not only ’to grace with someone’s presence’, but in a wider sense like sharing and giving wholeheartedly to others. Most of all, to ’live with grace’ somehow speaks of sharing and a giving without a need to get anything back.

I had a conversation the other day with a friend of mine and we talked about being present. My friend had just gotten an exercise on how to practice present moment awareness by letting go of negative thought patterns and replace them with an acceptance of what is right now. It’s a matter of being okay with whatever is happening, and whatever comes up when one quiets one’s mind. To be there, and not shy or run away from what’s right in front of you. It’s all about being courageous enough to meet your fears and demons. It’s what the bead movement propels me to do on a daily basis. My friend brought up another aspect of being in the now, to let go of our need to be affirmed, loved and seen which is incremental in our society today. We feed off constant feedback from others, especially so with the constant feed from all social media.

But if we are willing, we can lead a different path and be truly free. What if we were to accept the concept that if we give love we will receive it, instead of always just wanting and needing it from others. You know, what if we would turn it around. Imagine the amount of love that would be in free flow! We would have peace on earth. If we just trust that what we give we will get in return, the need for affirmation and being seen disappear, and we will get what we want. But what hinders most is that it’s scary. But who says life shouldn’t be scary, isn’t that in fact what it means to be living? I need to risk something in order to achieve the dream.

Winston Churchill said, ”We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”.

Then you might say that putting yourself out there in such a vulnerable manner is a recipe for disaster. That one might be hurt, fooled, turned down and potentially falling to one’s feet bleeding and never being able to stand up again. Sure, but if we give freely, someone else will show up and help you when you need it. That is the nature of our grand universe. It’s all a matter of having faith, isn’t it?

As mother Teresa wrote,

That to me is living with grace.
